Through filmmaking, photography, sculpture, archival display and video installation, artistic partners Hadjithomas and Joreige use personal encounters with objects, texts and images as a starting point. They employ scrupulous research to retrace the (sometimes fictional) histories of these objects and imagine ways to reconstruct their presence, as in their series Faces, which features images of posters found on the walls of the streets of Beirut that memorialise young men killed during Lebanon’s 15-year Civil War. These posters, which have been bleached by the sun and are in varying states of deterioration, are offered new life as the artists intervene in each images to revive aspects of each man’s facial features. The duo has received numerous awards and prizes for their films, including Best Film Singulier at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2008 for I Want To See (Je veux voir). Their work has been exhibited at international museums and biennials, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2013, the Beirut Exhibition Centre, 2012, and Sharjah Biennial 10 in 2011. Forthcoming solo shows will take place at HOME, Manchester, UK; MIT List Center, Cambridge, MA; Jeu de Paume, Paris; Haus Der Kunst, Munich and the Sharjah Art Foundation.
