The tantalizing ways in which Huguette Caland depicts the body as a landscape in her painting, drawing and textile work has sparked a resurgent interest in her long career. Spanning five decades, the breadth of Caland’s practice is extensive yet considerably devoted to feminist perspectives and nuanced representations of the feminine form. The daughter of Lebanon’s first president, Caland received personal tutoring from the Italian painter Fernando Manetti. During her formative period in Paris in the 1970s, she experimented with different media and designed over 100 kaftans for Pierre Cardin. Caland’s early erotic abstract paintings and drawings highlight the subtleties of seduction. Through the intermingling of body-like minimalist forms, Caland audaciously evokes sensuality between curves and contours. She has had solo shows in the USA, Beirut and Paris, including the Centre Pompidou in 2013 and the Institut du Monde Arabe, 2012.
