The breadth of Inji Efflatoun’s artwork embraces socialist literature, surrealism, feminism and political activism. Her paintings often draw on the daily struggles of Egypt’s working class. During Gamal Abdel Nasser’s regime, she was arrested under a decree authorising the detention of women taking part in political activism. During her incarceration, Efflatoun’s paintings captured the grim conditions in which she lived.
