Of the winning poem, judge Asmaa Azaizeh said: “This poem reveals a poetic insight through its clear approach to the question of absence, or death, manifested in a simplicity of language and imagery, and paired with a deeper exploration of the idea. It also exhibits a unique sensitivity, free from any linguistic or figurative pretense. With a casual language and an intimate tone, the poet describes a moment of personal loss, and we are quietly drawn in. All through this relatively short poem that seems to expend no linguistic effort, we are drawn closer and closer, as though we can nearly touch the absence felt by the poet.”

Of the runner-up poem, Azaizeh said: “In a very natural way, the cactus, the window, and the buzzard are transformed into creatures who make up the city and its temperament. There is a specificity to the metaphorical constructions in this poem: although the poet makes use of the common symbolic meaning of the cactus plant, he approaches it differently, compressed into simple images, approaching a silent, unseen nature, a narrative of history, or an invisible present. With quiet language and a striking visual sense, the poem gives us multiple keys of understanding that open more than one door to reflection and re-reading.”

Asmaa Azaizeh is a poet, essayist, and cultural manager based in Haifa. In 2010, Asmaa received the Debut Writer Award from Al Qattan Foundation for her volume of poetry Liwa, (Alahlia, 2011). She has two other volumes of poetry: As The Woman From Lod Bore Me (Alahlia, 2015) and Don’t Believe Me if I talk of War (2019) in Arabic, Dutch, and Swedish. Asmaa has also published a bilingual poetry anthology in German and Arabic, titled Unturned Stone (Alahlia, 2017). She has contributed to and participated in various journals, anthologies and poetry festivals around the world. Her poems have been translated into English, German, French, Persian, Swedish, Spanish, Dutch, Montenegrin, Greek, Italian, and Croatian. Asmaa has worked as an editor of print newspapers, a journalist and a presenter in various TV and radio stations, and as the artistic director of Fattoush book store, and Fattoush gallery in Haifa.
Islam Abdul Shahid Henaish is an Egyptian poet who works in the fields of geology and voiceovers.
Michrafy Abdelwadoud is a Moroccan poet and translator.

عن القصيدة الفائزة، قالت الحكم أسماء عزايزة:
“تكشفُ هذه القصيدة عن فهم شعريّ ذي نبرة صافية لسؤال الغياب أو الموت. تتبدّى شعريّتها في بساطة اللغة والصورة المصحوبة بسبر أعمق للفكرة. كما تُظهر حساسيّة خاصّة منزوعة من أيّ تكلّف لغويّ أو استعاريّ. بلغةٍ مرتاحة ونبرةٍ حميمة، يكتب الشاعر لحظة فقد شخصيّة، إلا أنّنا نُسحب معها بهدوء. نُشحن دون جهدٍ لغويّ، على امتداد قصيدة قصيرة نسبيًّا، لنفلت عند نهايتها من هذا الشّحن، فكأنّنا نقترب حتّى مسافة صفر من الغياب الذي شعر به الشاعر.”

وعن هذه القصيدة، قالت عزايزة:
“بطبيعيّة شديدة، تتحوّل نبتة الصّبار والنافذة والحدأة إلى كائناتٍ تكوّن المدينة ومزاجها. ثمّة إحكام ملموس في البناء الاستعاريّ للقصيدة. فعلى الرّغم من أنّ الشاعر وظّف الدلالة الرّمزيّة المعهودة لنبتة الصبّار، بيد أنّه عالجها على نحو مختلف، مختصرًا بصورة بسيطة، هي أقرب إلى طبيعة صامتة، سرديّة أو تاريخًا أو حاضرًا غير مرئيّ. بلغةٍ هادئة ذات حسّ بصريّ لافت، تعطينا القصيدة مفاتيح فهم متعدّدة تفتح أكثر من باب للإحالة وإعادة القراءة.”
